Welcome to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital (RWJ), where you will receive outstanding care provided by top-ranked physicians and nurses. Founded in 1884, RWJ is a 600-bed academic medical center and the principal teaching hospital of Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and the flagship Cancer Hospital of Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey.
RWJ is also the flagship hospital of Robert Wood Johnson Health System – New Jersey’s premier health system which boasts three acute care hospitals: RWJUH in New Brunswick; RWJUH-Hamilton and RWJUH-Rahway; The Bristol-Myers Squibb Children’s Hospital (BMSCH) at RWJUH and the nations largest provider of pediatric rehabilitation: Children’s Specialized Hospital, as well as five fitness and wellness centers. Through RWJ Health System, patients have access to exceptional women’s and children’s services and expert cancer, cardiac, emergency, neurology, stroke, trauma and pediatric rehabilitation care in addition to comprehensive health and wellness programs.
Our Centers of Excellence include cardiovascular care from minimally invasive heart surgery to transplantation, cancer care, and women’s and children’s care including BMSCH at RWJUH. The hospital is also a Level 1 Trauma Center and designated as New Jersey’s first and only pediatric trauma center. It also serves as a national resource in its ground-breaking approaches to emergency preparedness.

The Bristol-Myers Squibb Children’s Hospital at RWJ has also ranked among the nation’s Best Children’s Hospitals by U.S.News & World Report for two consecutive years. The American College of Surgeons’ Commission on Cancer has rated RWJUH among the nation's best comprehensive cancer centers and the hospital’s Comprehensive Stroke Center is certified by the Joint Commission to provide complex stroke care. RWJUH is also a four-time recipient of the prestigious Magnet Award for Nursing Excellence.
