Generations of Dance Event Benefits Cancer Center

March 23, 2010
The Bridgewater Roxies senior dance troupe will host its third annual “Generations of Dance,” a two-hour dance and talent showcase, on Sunday, May 2 featuring dancers from age 5 to 85. The program begins at 2 p.m. at Bridgewater-Raritan High School, 600 Garretson Road, Bridgewater. Proceeds benefit The Steeplechase Cancer Center at Somerset Medical Center through Somerset Medical Center Foundation.

The event was launched in 2008 by the Bridgewater Roxies, a group sponsored by the Bridgewater Seniors whose members range in age from 66 to 84. “Generations of Dance” was created in conjunction with the statewide Mayor’s Wellness Campaign Initiative to showcase the efforts that the Bridgewater Seniors take to improve and maintain their health through the aerobic and creative movement of dance. In addition to the Bridgewater Roxies, participating dance troupes include The Dance Connection of Hillsborough, the Tap Tone Dancers of Somerset Run and other groups throughout the community.

“It is so wonderful to see dancers across generations sharing a similar passion. We hope to inspire people of all ages throughout our community to get active through dance or other activities, including those offered at the Bridgewater Senior Center,” said Donna Langel of the Bridgewater Roxies. “At the same time, we want to help support Somerset Medical Center’s Steeplechase Cancer Center which is dedicated to improving cancer care in our community. Cancer awareness is near and dear to the Roxies and all of the show’s performers, some of whom are breast cancer survivors.”

The Steeplechase Cancer Center at Somerset Medical Center has achieved national recognition as a “Comprehensive Community Cancer Program” by the American College of Surgeons’ Commission on Cancer – a distinction only achieved by one in four hospitals that treat cancer patients. The center houses the Sanofi-aventis U.S. Breast Care Program, radiation oncology services, infusion therapy, physician offices, a clinical trials program, complementary medicine services and the Sanofi-aventis U.S. Wellness Boutique.

Admission to “Generations of Dance” is $10 for adults, $7 for children 12 and under and $7 for seniors 62 and over. Tickets are available for purchase in advance at the Bridgewater Senior Center or at the door. Doors open at 1 p.m. Seating is limited.
