New Physician Leaders Elected

Internist Betty Sanchez-Catanese, MD, of Lebanon, has been elected as President of Somerset Medical Center’s Medical and Dental Staff.
Surgeon Edward Buch, MD, of Somerville, was elected vice president and internist Shehzana Ashraf, MD, of Hillsborough, was elected secretary/treasurer.
Dr. Sanchez-Catanese, a graduate of Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, received her medical degree from New York Medical College in Valhalla, New York and completed her medical training at North Shore University Medical Center and Memorial Sloan Kettering Hospital, both in New York. She is board-certified in internal medicine and has been on staff at Somerset Medical Center since 1990. She has served on the Somerset Medical Center Board of Trustees and chaired the board’s quality committee. She previously served as the Vice-President of Somerset Medical Center’s medical/dental staff, as well as various other committees throughout Somerset Medical Center. Dr. Sanchez-Catanese is a member of the Somerset Medical Society of New Jersey, the American Medical Association, the American College of Physicians and the American Internal Medicine Society. She is also a past member and president of the Tewksbury Board of Education. Dr. Sanchez-Catanese maintains a solo practice in Somerville.
Dr. Buch is a graduate of Manhattan College in Riverdale, New York and received his medical degree from the State University of New York’s Downstate School of Medicine in Brooklyn. He completed his surgical training at Downstate Medical Center and a vascular fellowship at the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond. Dr. Buch is board-certified in general surgery, vascular surgery, vascular technology and wound care. He is chief of the vascular laboratory at Somerset Medical Center and previously served as chief of surgery and chief of vascular surgery at the medical center. He is also director of the Raritan Valley Vascular Center and maintains a private practice in Hillsborough. He is also a member of numerous general surgery and vascular societies.
Dr. Ashraf is the medical director of a private hospitalist practice and is the medical director for the hospitalist program at Somerset Medical Center. A graduate of Allama Iqbal Medical College in Lahore, in Pakistan, Dr. Ashraf is board certified in internal medicine. She completed her residency at Catholic Medical Center of Brooklyn and Queens, New York. Dr. Ashraf is the Ethics Committee Co-Chair, Vice-Chair of the Department of Medicine and is a member of the quality board at Somerset Medical Center.; in addition to various other committees
