Self-Referrals Now Accepted for Mammograms

To make it even easier for women to get their annual screening mammograms, the Sanofi-aventis U.S. Breast Care Program at Somerset Medical Center’s Steeplechase Cancer Center will now accept self-referrals.
The American Cancer Society recommends that all women age 40 and older have a screening mammogram each year for the early detection of breast cancer. Now women who don’t have a prescription will also be able to come to The Steeplechase Cancer Center for this important screening.
“Screening mammography has been proven to be highly effective in identifying breast cancer in its earliest, most treatable stages,” said radiologist Anthony Caravello, DO, co-director of the Sanofi-aventis U.S. Breast Care Program. “We hope that our self-referral program will encourage more women to get their annual mammograms in a timely manner.”
Results will be sent directly to each patient and abnormal findings will be shared with each woman’s physician. If a woman does not have a physician, she will be referred to a physician at the Sanofi-aventis U.S. Breast Cancer Institute at The Steeplechase Cancer Center for follow-up care.
“In addition to getting their annual screening mammograms, we recommend that women continue to see their doctors each year for a physical breast exam and that they continue to perform regular self breast exams,” said breast surgeon Angela Lanfranchi, MD, co-director of the Sanofi-aventis U.S. Breast Care Program. “Anyone who does notice a lump in her breasts or experience pain or any suspicious changes in her breasts should contact her doctor immediately.”
The Sanofi-aventis U.S. Breast Care Program is only one of six in New Jersey to achieve full accreditation by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers, a program administered by the American College of Surgeons. The center has also been designated a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence by the American College of Radiology. In addition, it has earned a reputation for its caring, experienced staff, consistently ranking among the top in New Jersey in patient satisfaction.
The center’s state-of-the-art technologies include digital mammography, the ImageChecker™ computer-aided detection system, breast biopsy with stereotactic guidance and MRI scans and MRI-guided breast biopsy. Each week, a multidisciplinary team of health care specialists – the Sanofi-aventis U.S. Breast Cancer Institute -- meets to discuss all breast cancer patients. The team’s review of patient cases ensures that the patients are offered the most appropriate and up-to-date treatment options. A breast cancer patient navigator helps coordinate patients’ treatment plans in conjunction with the multidisciplinary team.
